Bwejuu, Paje & Jambiani

ZANZIBAR EAST COAST

Bwejuu, Paje and Jambiani offer activites and a sense of community

The east coast of Zanzibar usually refers to the villages on the southeastern stretch of the beach. It starts from Uroa village, then goes on to Bwejuu, Paje, and Jambiani. It has a distinctive, relaxed atmosphere with mainly small hotel establishments, lots of local life, and kite surfers.

These villages and the less densely populated spaces in between offer beautiful tidal beaches and the opportunity to visit Zanzibari villages and walk the beach while trying out small cafes.

The east coast of Zanzibar offers lots of variety in accommodation options. Reasonably priced hostels and backpacker hotels are side-by-side with 5-star resorts.

Paje – a paradise for kite surfers and low budget travellers

A long sandy beach and shallow waters and wind at almost any time of year make Paje a perfect spot for kite surfing. Plus, it offers a wide selection of hotels in different price ranges, especially at the lower end of the spectrum.

But there’s no need to be a kite surfer to fully enjoy the east coast of Zanzibar. There are plenty of things to do in and around Paje and it’s a great base for exploring the island. Kizimkazi village, known for its local pod of dolphins, is just a short drive away. Jambiani village is within walking distance, and Jozani Forest is along the drive to Paje, with historic caves all around.

Paje also has some great beach bars and nightlife, with live music several nights a week. A great spot if you are looking to meet new people and enjoy some cocktails.

Bwejuu – great for peace seekers

In Bwejuu you will find a nice, peaceful place to relax. The village itself is very calm but offers some services such as shops, restaurants, and bike rentals. There’s no hustle and bustle here, but you’re not trapped in your beach resort either.

While Bwejuu is not a hub of activity like Paje and Jambiani, it’s only a short taxi ride (or a bit longer by bike) away from them.

Jambiani Village Tour

Jambiani – an excellent choice for cultural experiences

Jambiani village has many good hotels, but it’s best known for its cultural experiences. It’s also one of the main areas for seaweed farming and you can always find women at the beach during low tide, collecting seaweed. There is even a soap factory nearby that uses seaweed as the main ingredient.
