Stone Town Tour

All about Stone Town Tour

Stone Town is a very lively place where you’ll find a mixture of Arabic, African, Indian and European cultures living comfortably together. As you walk through the labyrinth of streets too narrow for cars to pass, you can see mosques, churches and temples side to side.

While you wonder around the city, your guide will take you on a historical and cultural journey through the old slave market, Darajani market place, the House of Wonders, the Old Fort and the Sultan’s Palace. Tour also includes a lunch in a restaurant or in a local house, if agreed beforehand.

While the tour is only half a day, we recommend you to stay in Stone Town for at least two days to discover many more magnificent wonders. Forodhani Gardens is definitely worth a visit, especially at night when it comes alive as one of the best street food markets in East Africa.

The walking tour in and around Stone Town was excellent. Our guide Mohammed was very knowledgeable and knew the stories and history of all of Zanzibars sites. He picked us up at our hotel and as we were the only ones scheduled for the tour he was able to tailor it to or needs. I have 9 family members that will be visiting Dar and Zanzibar from the states and I will be booking the Stone Town Walking Tour in Zanzibar for them with Mohammed as their guide. If youre spending more than one day in Stone Town, I recommend going on the tour your first day if possible. That way if you see any little restaurants, boutiques, shops etc. that you like youll have time to return.

I had an amazing experience with Colors of Zanzibar, starting from the initial communication we had three months before my vacation began. The people I emailed were very courteous and made every arrangement possible for me to experience and enjoy both these tours.

The day of the tour I arrived at my hotel and was greeted by Mohammed while I was in the waiting area. We had a very good chat with the driver as well on our way to the Spice farm. Mohammed told me all about historical places we were passing by. At the spice farm I was quizzed about what the spice could possibly be, and was fascinated by all the things I learned there. We also had a locally prepared lunch, tasted some of the fresh fruit and made our way back to the city. Since it was pretty hot and was the middle of the afternoon, Mohammed gave me the option of resting in the hotel and meeting him later in the evening for the walking tour.

He came back to the hotel and picked me up around 4 PM, and we walked around Stone Town for a good three hours! I got to visit the Slave Museum (it can get overwhelming reading about the history of slavery). We also walked by Freddy Mercury House, visited a jewelry store to ogle at some Tanzanites, and also went to some local shops where I was able to buy some souvenirs. I also really wanted to get some sugarcane juice, and Mohammed was nice enough to get me some at the end of our tour.

Overall I had a great last day of vacation, and I'm so glad I chose Colors of Zanzibar!

My friend and I visited Stone Town and wanted to get the lay of the land. Colors of Zanzibar came up as a highly recommended tour company and we wholeheartedly agreed. Our tour guide Mohammed was incredibly knowledgeable and wonderfully personable and funny, which made our historic tour of Stone Town really enjoyable. When we finished, we booked another tour with Mohammed for the next day, which was a tour that incorporated snorkeling, which was also very enjoyable. If you visit Stone Town and are interested in tours of the area, this is the company for you!

Colors of Zanzibar is the best Organisation that we ever had.

They are very helpful and respond to our requests.

We booked the following tours: spice tour and stone town tour together. The guides were very good and knowledgeable. Especially Mbwana. He told us a lot of things about stone town which makes Zanzibar more interesting. Furthermore we booked Nungwi village tour which was an extraordinary experience for us. Thank you to our guide Haji, who maked the tour funnier. At least we booked Josani tour and Prison Island together. We are also thankful to our guide Mohamed Amigo who sang songs with us and maked our way to Prison Island very funny. We enjoyed it.

Also the Driver (Suwwid and Mudi) of this Organisation were very careful with us and gave aditionally Information about everyday life of the Population.

Thank you Colors of Zanzibar for making our vacation wonderful.

Colors of Zanzibar provided for almost all of my transportation (4 trips to and from the airport) and tour needs while I was on Zanzibar. Aino was meticulous in her responses to my questions and I have many. My airport and tour pickups were always prompt. My tours to Stonetown, Prison Island, and Jozani forest were well organized and were adjusted according to my interests and requests and even my injury 2 days before I left. Special thanks to Rahma and Faud (please forgive me if I misspelled your name) for sharing your pride and knowledge of your beautiful island.

Professional, knowledgable, engaging and good value. We took a half day Stone Town tour today with our two children. We were impressed from the outset - timely pick up in a great van with a friendly driver. When we arrived in Stone Town, our friendly Zanzibari guide was well versed in the history of the area and tailored our walking tour perfectly to our family. All in all a really enjoyable experience and we will be sure to take (and recommend) other Colors of Zanzibar tours in the future.
