Playgrounds
There are 2 big playgrounds around the Stone Town area — one in Forodhani and one at Jamhuri Gardens. These have a small entrance fee of 1000 Tanzanian shillings, which is around 50 cents EUR. All playgrounds have good-condition equipment and lots for kids to do, as well as relaxed seating for the parents. They’re also a great place for kids to make local friends!
Amusement Park & Water Park
There is a big, recently renovated amusement park in Zanzibar City, called Kariakoo. The park is run by the local fire department, and so meets high safety standards. It has perhaps a dozen different kinds of rides and there are also stands for food and toys. Attached to the amusement park is a large water park with long water slides and pools.
Zoo & Water Park
A bit further from town is the Zanzibar Zoo, which also includes a water park. Like Kariakoo, this is a popular destination for local families. The zoo houses Tanzanian animals and camels.
Nature Destinations
There’s Jozani National Park with its red colobus monkeys, Prison Island with its giant tortoises, and the Nungwi aquariums with turtles and fish, as well as many other nature destinations in Zanzibar. These are all very suitable for families and offer a great way to teach the little ones about nature.

Maybe the greatest family rooms on the island, with kids’ beds and super-spacious terraces. There’s a small playground near the pool and direct access to the tranquil beach of Bwejuu.
Mnarani Beach Resort
This locally owned small resort is optimal for peace and quiet. It’s within walking distance from Nungwi but still private and offers sea-view family rooms and a beachfront with hammocks and swings.
Sunshine Hotel
This eco-hotel offers a kid-friendly pool and play area in the restaurant. It’s directly on the beautiful Matemwe beach, where you can create the greatest sandcastles out of the fine sand.
