ABOUT SELOUS, MIKUMI & RUAHA

Three of the best

national parks

in one go

At 55,000 km2, Selous National Park in southern Tanzania is one of the world’s largest protected reserves. It is home to an array of wildlife, including elephants, hippos, antelopes, lions, and cheetahs.

Mikumi National Park is a game reserve located in Tanzania’s Morogoro region and forms a contiguous area with the Selous Game Reserve. The golden grasslands of north-western Mikumi set the stage for a wonderful concentration of mammals, birds, and reptiles, while the impenetrable forests and mountains to the southeast border Selous.

Ruaha National Park, located in the Iringa Region, is home to over 10,000 elephants and is popular for its vast grassy plains, lush forests, towering mountains, and beautiful landscapes. Ruaha is one of Tanzania’s most popular destinations for safari and is a must-see for anyone visiting the African continent.

Tour Itinerary

DAY 1

We’ll pick you up at your accommodation in Dar es Salaam and drive you to Selous National Park. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the beautiful landscapes en route.

We’ll stop for lunch at a local restaurant along the way to try some traditional African dishes. Then we’ll proceed directly to Selous.

While passing the Rufiji riverbanks, you’ll have a chance of spotting baboons.

You’ll spend the night at the Kituri Selous Camp.

DAY 2

In the morning, we’ll drive to Selous Mbega Camp and check in.

In the afternoon, we’ll proceed with a Rufiji boat tour. This is a perfect opportunity to watch as birds fish for their prey along the mighty Rufiji River.

This region is rich in wildlife, including hippos, crocodiles, and various kinds of reptiles. We’ll carry on with the tour until sunset, so you can enjoy the reflection of the sun on the water’s surface and take beautiful pictures.

We’ll head back to the main station for dinner.

DAY 3

We’ll start early with a nature walk in the company of a local park ranger. You’ll explore the forest region along the shores of the Rufiji River, which is home to elephants, hippos, buffalos, and warthogs, as well as the white colobus monkeys that are very rare in other parts of Selous.

At 9 am we’ll drive back to the camp for a late breakfast. At 11 am we’ll start exploring Selous, the biggest game reserve in Africa, hosting massive herds of various kinds of mammals.

The game drive will continue until sunset when we’ll drive over to Mikumi Safari Lodge for dinner.

DAY 4

We’ll have breakfast at 6 am, then set out on a morning game drive. You’ll be able to catch sight of early-bird herbivores while grazing.

Before lunch, we’ll continue with the game drive on our way to Morogoro, passing through the Uluguru Mountains Ridge.

We’ll stop in Morogoro for a little stretch, then proceed to Mikumi National Park.

You’ll spend the night at Ruaha Hilltop Lodge.

DAY 5

We’ll start with breakfast around 7-8 am, then drive to Ruaha National Park, taking in the beautiful landscapes en route.

We’ll stop by the Kitonga Escarpment, one of the beautiful features on the way, and also explore the kopjes (small hills) that form part of the Iringa region.

We’ll stop for a hot lunch at a local restaurant in Iringa and come back to Ruaha for dinner.

DAY 6

After breakfast at 6 am we’ll set out on an early-morning game drive in Ruaha, an expansive national park of approximately 21,000 km2.

Ruaha is home to different kinds of kudu, and big troops of lions are also common here.

We’ll stop for lunch at a picnic site and continue with a game drive until sunset.

You’ll have dinner and spend the night at Twiga Lodge & Campsite.

DAY 7

We’ll have a half-day game drive in Ruaha National Park, enjoying game photography in the savanna vegetation park. Here you’ll have the chance to encounter early herbivores while grazing.

We’ll continue with the game drive until 11 am when we’ll drive to Iringa for lunch and depart to Mikumi for the night.

DAY 8

Today we’ll take breakfast with us and start early for Mikumi National Park.

You’ll have a high chance of spotting all the “big five.” We’ll also visit hippo pools and go for a short nature walk.

At noon we’ll stop for lunch at the park’s restaurant and continue exploring until late afternoon.

DAY 9

On the last day, we’ll take you from Mikumi National Park back to Dar es Salaam.

After a long week of safari, you’ll no doubt be ready for some beach rest on the Zanzibar Islands!
