ABOUT SERENGETI, NGORONGORO & TARANGIRE
The best of Tanzania safari in one go
Tarangire National Park is in northern Tanzania, just south of the town of Arusha. It’s known for its large herds of elephants, which migrate to the park during the dry season. It is also home to a variety of other animals, including lions, cheetahs, buffalo, wildebeest, and impala, as well as many species of birds and reptiles.
Covering nearly 15,000 km2, Serengeti National Park is one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet. It’s also famously the site of the “Great Migration,” a unique phenomenon during which millions of animals migrate annually.
In addition to the Great Migration, the Serengeti is home to the “big five” of Africa that every safari-goer dreams of seeing: lions, leopards, rhinos, buffalo, and elephants. Its diverse wildlife and birdlife make it a popular tourist attraction.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is a protected area located 180 km west of Arusha in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania. It’s home to the famous Ngorongoro Crater — the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera.
After breakfast, we’ll leave Arusha for Tarangire National Park, a beautiful area stretching southeast of Lake Manyara around the Tarangire River.
During the dry season, (July – October), Tarangire has one of the highest concentrations of wildlife of any of the country’s parks.
Then we’ll transfer to Karatu for an overnight rest at the Marera Valley Lodge with an amazing viewpoint.
The next day we’ll drive to Serengeti. We’ll have lunch en route at Olduvai Gorge and check out the nearby archaeological sites, where early human tools and fossils have been found.
In the afternoon, we’ll have a game drive in the rolling grasslands. Criss-crossed with forested riverine valleys, the Serengeti is home to millions of Africa’s large mammals, making this one of the world’s most famous wildlife destinations.
We’ll spend the night at the Serengeti Serena Hotel.
Today’s program is a full-day game drive in Serengeti. The best time for the wildebeest migration is December to June but there are spectacular wildlife sights at any time of year.
If you happen to visit in August when the wildebeest are migrating north, you’ll have the option of driving out to see them, with a chance of witnessing a river crossing on their way to Kenya.
We’ll spend another night at Serena.
After early breakfast, we’ll drive to Ngorongoro Crater for spectacular scenery and a game viewing in what has been described as the “eighth wonder of the world.”
Ngorongoro is a collapsed volcano, an incredible natural amphitheatre, 25km across and teeming with all of the African big game.
In the afternoon, we’ll transfer back to Arusha Airport for a late-afternoon flight.
